A Piece of Mind (SA)
— Ever wished you could get inside someone’s head?
Hear their thoughts and see the world from their perspective?
This installation makes that possible.
It portrays differing points of view that you can hear and see.
Diversity in point of view
Ever wished you could get inside someone’s head? Hear their thoughts and see the world from their perspective? This installation makes that possible. It portrays differing points of view that you can hear and see.
Imagine hearing the thoughts of four, very different South Africans, who experience the same event in their own ways. Through each perspective, you’ll not only get glimpse of how others think, but gain insight into your own attitudes too.
The installation’s application is infinite, comfortably suiting an Art or Theatre Festival, as easily as it serves Teambuilding, Corporate Training, Events and Community Projects. Its themes and content can be customised to any issue, such as Diversity, (Mis)Understanding, Race, Prejudice and Gender, to name a few. As the installation is mobile and lives on a trailer, it offers easy access and haulage.
Our latest project illustrates its potential. Here, we chose a wedding as our setting to explore different attitudes toward marriage, monogamy, love, desire and partnership.
Welcome to Kagiso and Nozi’s wedding. Around one of the decorative tables sit four guests who are strangers to one another. Imagine Natasha and Nikiwe sitting across from each other, as do two men – Timothy and Mpilo. We are able to hear each guest’s thoughts that reveal their unique perspective on love and life.
Each character’s thoughts are about 3 minutes. Each headphone presents the thoughts of one character and each side of the cake represents the visually translated perspective of one character. So, once you’ve sat down and listened to one thought, feel free to move on to another, jumping into each guest’s head to get a full picture of the story.
